Weight Management Case Studies Mary Mary is 55 years old and works part time on a voluntary basis; she is not married but has close family support. Mary has a weight issue being about 4 stones overweight.
When Mary first started with Up for It? she did no exercise at all and had no information as to what to eat to become healthier and to lose weight.
On her first visit we spoke about different food choices she could make which would reduce her calorie intake one of which being to choose “diet” drinks rather than full sugar. We made this her target for the following session, which she did achieve. We also spoke of the importance of combining calorie reduction with exercise and agreed that she would start using her Up for It? card to go swimming.
Within a short space of time Mary had drastically altered her diet, changing from Chip Shop meals etc., to far more healthy options which she felt was very easy to maintain as she enjoyed the food she was eating and didn’t feel hungry or miss the unhealthy food.
Not only did Mary start eating a good balanced diet but she also found great enjoyment in attending her local swimming club and used her leisure card within the first 4 weeks. The benefit she got from swimming motivated her to start exercising in her own home.
Through affirmation and support Mary has far more self confidence and her self esteem is growing all the time, she has lost 1st 2lbs since starting the weight management programme and has joined her local leisure centre.
Jean
Jean Robertson was referred to the Up for It? health and lifestyle programme by her general practitioner who felt that she required the services of the programme. Following her health check she was recommended for the exercise and leisure option and she began to use her local leisure facility, Blantyre Sports Centre. She used the facility over the period of her free year, using the gym; where she used the treadmill, rowing machine and bike. Following swimming lessons she did aqua fit classes and she also attended the prime time club which provides easy aerobics. Following her free year Jean decided to continue with her membership as she felt she wanted to continue with the lifestyle change she had started. Over the last few years Jean has lost an amazing 12 stone in weight. She feels her life has completely turned around. She feels 100% better in herself. She is no longer short of breathe on exertion and several of her medical problems have also disappeared. She is motivated and often uses the gym at 7am before going to the pool for a swim. She uses the facility at least 4 times a week. Jean has made many new friends since she started using the leisure centre.
Jean is a great example of what can be achieved with dedication and motivation and a lot of hard work. Well done Jean!
